🌿 Step-by-Step Hiking Guide - Cretan hiking trails

🏠 From Natura to Pefki Village
Start your walk directly from your cottage. A short, scenic uphill path (approx. 15 minutes) takes you through olive groves to the traditional village of Pefki, where the trail officially begins. It’s a lovely way to warm up and catch glimpses of the Libyan Sea in the distance.
☕ Tip: Grab a coffee or refill your bottle at the small café in the village square before heading into the gorge.
⛰️ Entering the Gorge
You’ll find trail markers (yellow-and-black E4 signs) near the old Ilias Watermill, a historic spot that marks the gorge entrance. The descent into the gorge quickly immerses you in towering limestone walls, wild herbs, and the calming shade of pine and carob trees.
Estimated Time: 45–60 minutes through the gorge
Trail Conditions: Natural dirt and stone paths, occasional rocky sections, minimal scrambling
💧 Water stop: There’s a spring-fed water tap near the trail midpoint (best in spring–early summer). Still, bring at least 1.5L of water.

🌄 Aspros Potamos & Return Path
As you exit the gorge, you’ll pass near Aspros Potamos, another old Cretan hamlet. The path continues gently downhill toward Makry-Gialos, where you can enjoy a swim, lunch by the beach, or simply catch your breath under a tamarisk tree.
🍉 Post-hike tip: We recommend a refreshing drink or fresh fish lunch at a seaside taverna in Makry-Gialos before walking or taking a taxi back.
